5 Sentences By Robin Williams

5 sentences by Robin Williams

We met Robin Williams thanks to his work as an actor. Some of his most memorable films are ‘Dead Poets Society’, ‘Indomitable Genius’ and ‘An Almost Perfect Nanny’, among many others that still move us today thanks to the depth of their message. Today we are going to discover some phrases by Robin Williams that will allow us, in addition to reflecting, to get to know him better.

Although everything seemed to go well for Robin Williams, on August 11, 2014 he was found hanging in his home. This surprised all his fans, until his last wife, Susan Schneider, said that he suffered from Parkinson’s and that the diagnosis affected him so much that perhaps it was one of the motivations that led him to take his own life. Next, let’s see some of the sentences left by him.

Robin Williams phrases that invite us to reflect

1. Being alone… even surrounded by people

In the first sentence of Robin Williams, we recognize a certain sadness but, at the same time, a great truth. Who has never felt alone being surrounded by people ? Having this feeling often can indicate to us that we have a great emptiness inside or that we are not with the right people.

Many people with low self-esteem feel this way,  and this can lead to isolation as a way to protect themselves. While loneliness can be terrible, it’s much worse to be around people you can’t connect with. Perhaps, in these circumstances, it would be good to ask ourselves if we surround ourselves with people who add us or who motivate us to add.

2. Learn from mistakes

Robin Williams’ second sentence urges us to step out of our comfort zone. Although we can be very comfortable in it, the significant things, the things that can most encourage us to grow, are outside of it. Within this area, we take on challenges, but they hardly put our ability to the test.

Mistakes help us to be better, to know where to go, and to improve certain aspects of our lives. If we never made mistakes, it would be difficult for us to advance and we would be stuck in stagnation.

3. Live intensely

Many people consider that living intensely or living as if it were the last day of their lives inevitably means following a list of crazy things. However, this association is not correct. To live this way, we don’t need to take a trip or anything out of the ordinary. We just have to pay attention to the little things.

It is possible to live intensely if we begin to appreciate the time we spend with the people we love; taking care of every moment and making the most of it. We can also live this way if we value money, the bed we sleep in, or the delicious food we have on our plate. Being grateful and enjoying what we don’t value will help us live life to the full.

4. We are our own teachers

Robin Williams’ fourth sentence allows us to reflect on the idea that we are  our own teachers. Because with our mistakes and the decisions we made, we learned a series of lessons that no one else can teach us.

Although the school transmits us a multitude of information and skills that are necessary, it is the “handling” of knowledge that ends up teaching us the most. As Robin Williams said, this is far better than all the magic and riches in the world. Because  we have something very valuable that we rarely recognize: ourselves.

5. Having too much and not knowing how to manage

This last sentence by Robin Williams talks about one of the periods when alcohol and drugs were very present in his life. This phrase has a lot of irony, something that characterized the actor, who used to play with all kinds of subjects.

It’s sad, but often people with a lot of resources end up trying drugs, something that shakes their lives violently. On many of these occasions, it’s the feeling of not knowing what else to spend to feel better that causes them to fall into the pit.

Robin Williams

All these phrases by Robin Williams allow us to get closer to this actor who, at age 63, decided to take his own life. Some make us think that there could be some kind of emptiness inside. Others allow us to approach some harmful experiences that could have marked him. However, they encourage us to live and enjoy life in a way that brings us closer to what we believe to be happiness, but which could be better characterized as balance and well-being.
